Nordic Walking is a fun and natural way to get fit and to burn calories while being outdoors. It's great for your posture, weight loss and reducing stress levels. Nordic Walking is suitable for all fitness levels and ages.

Classes and private lessons are appropriate to your fitness level and goals. For individuals with advanced fitness; Nordic Jogging and Hill Paths can be introduced to keep you challenged.

Nordic walking can be combined with Ski Fitness Exercises to make the perfect Pre-Ski Conditioning Class. Using the poles helps you to improve your ski pole planting techniques and your upper body ski fitness. David Calder is a former world cup skier and he has developed a Nordic Ski Fitness class with Niall Murray, who is himself a qualified snow boarding instructor and keen skier.

Physical Benefits

  • Tones the upper and lower body at the same time
  • Uses 90% of the skeletal muscles
  • Burns up to 46% more calories than ordinary walking
  • Reduces the pressure on knees and joints
  • Great for the Heart and Lungs
  • Ideal for neck, shoulder and back problems
  • Helps develop better posture
  • Poles propel the walker along, making it easier to move faster than normal
  • It is an effective low impact cross training technique for athletes and sportspeople
  • Nordic Walking can be adapted to take participants through a range of levels from beginner to advanced

1. Health improvement

A gentle range of movement that encourages general mobility and suitable aerobic training.

2. Fitness development

A slightly more vigorous movement that takes the participant into a full body workout and facilitates increased calorie burn.

3. Sports specific

Highly effective method of cross training for any sportsman/woman that can involve bounding, jumps and Nordic running. Each level has a specific range of movements that need to be learned and practiced.

As a qualified NWUK Instructor and Personal Trainer, Niall Murray is fully trained to help participants learn good technique and can identify faults early in order to avoid potential problems.

The correct poles are also an integral part of the technique – only those with the correct hand strap will enable the full movement.

It is really important to learn good technique that is tailored to the requirement of the individual - poor technique and wrong sized poles can result in discomfort and injury. We provide you with poles for your walk and set them up correctly for you.

We conduct Nordic Walks for all levels in Inverleith Park, The Water of Leith river pathways, The Pentlands Hills and loch side paths and Arthur's Seat.
